The Power of books

You're going to hear a lot this year about books. Sorry/not sorry.

Students: I'll be telling you about books I've read, books I've heard about, books I think you'll like.

Parents: You'll be hearing about books Mrs. George is reading in class. Books the whole class is reading. And, hopefully, your child will come home talking about a book they're finally going to try because Mrs. George keeps bugging them about it.

I am all about reading.

Why? Because books have power. They have the power to heal us. They have the power to make us think. Make us question. Books can be fun, exciting, scary, and they can be a safe gateway to explore topics that students maybe haven't talked about before.

Over the course of this year, all of my classes will read at least 98 books. I'm going to read 90 books out loud to them in class, and they'll read 8 on their own. Why? Because the more you read, the better you get. The more you read, the more you understand. The more you read, the more the world is opened to you.

And I want that for each of my students.

Happy reading!

New Year, new opportunity

8/12/2015

The new school year is always exciting to me. We come to school with new hair cuts, new backpacks, new clothes, sharpened pencils, crisp paper...well, you get the idea.

What is most important to me, though, is the feeling of opportunity. The school year holds so much potential right at the beginning. Everyone is excited and eager. Before tests stress sets in and exhaustion from practices takes hold, take a moment and enjoy this feeling.

The opportunity to make this year great. Because it will be.
The opportunity to do new things things year. Because you can.
The opportunity to challenge yourself. Because life isn't fun without a little competition, even if it is you you're competing against.

Read a new book, study a little more, be in a play, sing in choir, write a book, take up a new sport.

Why not, right? I mean, nothing is set in stone. You can do anything this year.

I can't wait to see what you choose to accomplish!

Go Blues!
