Why it's importantThe power of the internet is not only that it brings people together from all over the world, but that communication can happen fast. The downside, though, is that it's easy to make our writing and communication lazy.
With friends, we can use shorthand/text-speak/emojis to communicate our messages. With teachers, employers, and people we don't know, however, our communication needs to be more formal. This page should help you communicate with people online effectively and professionally. Remember--anything that goes on the internet stays on the internet. |

Formatting Documents |
In English class, we do a lot of writing and a lot of typing. Formatting it for ease of readability and for getting comments back is very important. Above, you'll find a document that I have readily available in class and that students go over the first few weeks of school to make sure they understand. Please feel free to download this to keep at home if students are working at home.

E-mailing teachers |
It's unfair, I know, but in school, teachers are your bosses. With that in mind, it's important that you communicate formally and clearly with them. Remember--what you turn in/communicate, is the only way the teacher can understand what you need and help. Therefore, it's important to be clear and specific in communication. Emojis are good for your friends, but not very professional. If you get in the good habit of appropriate online communication now, it'll be an easier habit to keep in the future.
Remember: take pride in everything you do, everything you communicate. You're presenting yourself every time you turn in an assignment or e-mail me! |
